- Build your own unique portfolio: You will have to build your personal website, Behance, Instagram and Dribbble so as to make more money as a graphics designer. Your portfolio website is the first step to take as it will showcase your previous works to the public. You can’t just lazily email prospective clients a list of links to sites you’ve worked on. Your personal site should be the crown jewel of your portfolio showing your best works. You have to show yourself as a design professional if you want to be taken seriously and secure high pay for your jobs. Your own portfolio is your cred.
Freelance job marketplaces

Upwork is an online marketplace designed to connect freelancers with prospective clients all around the world. All you need to do is create a profile of your own, upload your portfolio, and start bidding on contracts from persons that require designs. You can even apply for jobs you might not feel totally qualified for yet — that’s how you grow and become an even better graphics designer with the motive of making more money.
One thing to note before you join Upwork: You will probably notice a lot of bids far below a rate you’d be comfortable working for.
Don’t let this discourage you. I have been consistently winning over 50% of my bids on Upwork, even when I was vying against 30 other people asking for significantly less.
Why? Because employers don’t want to waste their time. They all generally prefer to work with designers that are skillful communicators who do not come with the baggage of a 16-hour time difference. In other words, no clients on these platforms don’t just care about how much they’re paying. They want quality designs that stand out. Massive companies like Namecheap, Godaddy, Hostgator and Fortune 500’s rely on these platforms. Don’t dismiss them as they might turn out to be your big clients that will pay you well because of your expertise.
If you’re not comfortable with written communication, honing your English and your writing will be more important than improving your portfolio. That’s priority number one. Otherwise, international work (or work in the biggest markets) will often be hard to find — or disproportionately low-paying.
- Own your own Blogging Platform: Whether on Medium, your own website, or here on your Instagram page, Behance and facebook page, blogging can be a good and effective way to establish yourself as an expert in your field. Share your thoughts and engage in online conversations with business owners.
- Join Template marketplaces: These numerous websites Webflow, CreativeMarket, and ThemeForest are available for you to sell your graphics design works
- Networking: Avail yourself at where your customers are and talk to them one-on-one.
- Word of mouth: This is the simplest way to get jobs, talk to friends, acquaintances and family, tell them about you skill and you will be called to design things for them. Make it easier on yourself… stay in and have people do the talking for you.
- Publish your works online: This way people will get to see your jobs and when once you are known, you will be contacted to work for them

Just have it in mind that, no matter the event type or place, you have to actually talk to people you do not already know. Establish these relationships and your clienteles will increase drastically paving way for you to make more more money designing all day.
The other side of the networking coin — word of mouth — comes from building up a client base, having lots of contacts, and building your personal brand (with your blog, portfolios, and templates). This takes time. Do great work and treat your clients with respect and honesty and also make sure you deliver their jobs on time and don’t overcharge, keep in touch with past clients, and follow the rest of the advice in this article, and you’ll absolutely be fine.
With networking and word of mouth, you can easily reach a state of having more work proposals than you can sustain—without ever actually working for it. When this happens, you can increase the rates at which you charge. Personally, I turn down contract offers on a weekly basis because at the level of my freelance jobs I now have to fix my rates to favor me so clients that do not afford will have to check on me later when they have the money. And they’re all the result of word of mouth and networking I did months ago.
Hints: Don’t be the typical “business networker.” Don’t bounce from person to person shaking hands, fake-smiling, repeating first names every sentence, and handing out business cards. Be legitimate. Establish real connections with the people you meet in your everyday life.
